Colosseum Codex: P-Token, Solana Developer Program, Alpenglow Community Cluster

Here's what's featured in this week's issue:

  • Anza releases P-Token on mainnet
  • Solana Developer Platform is now open source
  • Alpenglow Community Cluster test is live

⚡ P-Token

Anza shipped P-Token, an optimized rewrite of the SPL Token program, to Solana mainnet. Token instructions now use about 96% less compute, freeing 12-13% more block space for the network without changing block limits.

P-Token replaces the underlying code of the existing SPL Token program with a zero-copy architecture built on Pinocchio. Developers keep the same program ID and clients while gaining the compute reduction and new batching features.

Behavioral parity with the original program is backed by extensive auditing, fuzzing, and formal verification.

The change is specified in SIMD-0266, the Efficient Token Program proposal.

🛠️ Solana Developer Platform

The Solana Foundation has open sourced the Solana Developer Platform, an API-first enterprise development system for building and prototyping Solana-powered apps.

The platform provides wallets, token issuance, payments, compliance checks, and a hosted dashboard. It's built on Cloudflare Workers with a REST API and OpenAPI documentation, and the hosted version runs at platform.solana.com.

Full mainnet support is a few months out, and the project currently targets devnet-oriented development. The maintainers note the codebase has not been audited.

A self-hosting guide is expected in the next few weeks.

🌄 Alpenglow Community Cluster

Anza launched the Alpenglow community test cluster on May 11, letting external validator operators run the new consensus code in a live environment for the first time. The public cluster currently shows about 49 validators participating.

Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT and Proof-of-History with two new protocols, Votor and Rotor, targeting transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds, down from roughly 12.8 seconds. The change also frees up block space currently consumed by validator vote transactions.

Developers are also testing "Alpenswitch," the validator migration between TowerBFT and Alpenglow in a live network setting.

Mainnet activation, originally targeted for Q1 2026, could come next quarter if testing proceeds smoothly, per Anatoly Yakovenko at Consensus Miami. Next steps are packaging Alpenglow into an Agave release and activating it on testnet.

You can explore the live cluster via the Alpenglow Explorer operated by Valid Blocks.
